Halloumi & Asparagus Skewers with Orange Sauce
Tomorrow look for a Food Tour of Augusta and the day after there will be a Food Tour of Savannah. I took a ton of pictures at all of the foodie locations we went to and I needed to split it into two posts. Like with my Food Tour of England post, I'm going to try to recreate some of the recipes.
It's very appropriate considering that I had halloumi for the first time while I was in England. Halloumi is cheese that maintains it's shape when heated and can be grilled. It has an excellent flavor and it a great way to spice up your summer grilling routine. A warning, it is a little expensive, but it is one of the few ingredients that I splurge on.
Other Grilling Wednesday Posts: Bean and Squash Burgers.
Recipe from Kwestia Smaku.
Ingredients:
-1 bunch asparagus, cleaned and sliced into one-two inch pieces
-1 block of halloumi cheese, sliced into flat square pieces
-freshly ground pepper and optional salt (note: the cheese can be quite salty)
Orange Sauce
-4 tablespoons orange jam
-2 tablespoons lemon juice
Skewer two asparagus spears and one piece of halloumi cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used. Mix together the ingredients for the orange glaze and brush over the skewers. Cook on a well oiled grill until the Halloumi has grill marks. If your grill is not well oiled the cheese will stick!
This recipe got mixed reviews. I liked it the best out of everyone, I also really enjoy halloumi cheese. My brother and Dave thought it was just okay. For the most part the orange glaze wasn't very apparent, a lot of it cooked off during the grilling process. The orange taste was a little noticeable on some pieces of asparagus, otherwise it wasn't.
