General Tso's Tofu

Most people, especially non-vegetarians, hate tofu. Give tofu a chance! This recipe is one of the best tofu recipes that I have ever made. Dave's roommate's children watched us make this recipe and were really curious about the tofu. We let them each try a square and they were hooked! Both asked for more. This General Tso's Tofu recipe is kid approved.

Recipe from Grumpy Shoney Bunch.

Ingredients:
-1 brick extra firm tofu
-3-4 Tablespoons cornstarch
-1 Tablespoon olive oil

Sauce
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
3 tbsps Hoisin
3 Tablespoons white vinegar
3 Tablespoons Ketchup
2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
1/2 Cup water
-6-8 spring green onions, sliced
-3 Tbsps fresh ginger finely chopped

If you've never worked with extra firm tofu before, you'll need to remove it from the water pack and press it between two paper towels. You should place a heavy object on top to help get the water out.

While the tofu presses, mix together the brown sugar, hoisin, vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and water.

Slice the tofu in half horizontally.
Then slice into squares.

Coat each in the cornstarch.

Fry until golden brown in a skillet of hot oil.
Drain on a paper towel.
Clean out the skillet.
Add a little bit of oil and heat.
Add in the green onions and ginger.
Saute for one to two minutes.

Add in the sauce you made at the beginning.
Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for two minutes.

Add in the tofu and toss to coat.
Deliciousness.

Serve with additional sauce if desired.

As I mentioned before, I was really impressed with this recipe. There is a lot of downtime to press the water out of the tofu, but otherwise this didn't take too long to make. I think that the sauce tasted just like the General Tso's sauce that you can get at any restaurant that serves the traditional General Tso's Chicken. I would make this recipe again.
