Baguette French Toast

Welcome to the 350th post here at Vegetarian and Cooking! 

J. and I are back to our summer routine of living an hour apart, which means when he stays over here on the weekends I need to whip up a great breakfast for him before he goes back home. This Baguette French Toast was the perfect solution. It took an hour from start to finish which sounds like a lot, but there was so much down time -- soak in the batter for half an hour and then bake for half an hour.

This recipe comes from Dash and Bella.

-1 baguette, a bit stale
-3 tablespoons butter
-3 eggs
-2 cups whole milk
-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-2 tablespoons orange juice
-pinch of salt
-3 tablespoons sugar
-powdered sugar for the top
-Toppings of your choice

Trim the ends off of a baguette.
Slice in half, then into pieces that will fit into a 9-13.
Spread butter onto all of the pieces. 
Whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, orange juice and salt.
Pour over the pieces. 

Soak for half an hour.
Flipping once every ten minutes.
Drain most of the excess liquid from the pan before putting it in the oven, you'll want the bread to be in a small pool of liquid.

Flip so the bread is cut side up.
Sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 375 for thirty minutes.
Then broil for 3-5 minutes until golden brown on the top.

Serve with desired toppings. 

I served mine with some real maple syrup. 

We made this recipe and it was gone in less than ten minutes. It tastes just like French Toast, but with less work. This would be great for Christmas morning because you could have a delicious breakfast, but no one needs to stand to flip the French Toast.
